Benjamin Nate

Benjamin Nate has over 25 years of experience in public health policy and government relations. He is currently State Manager at the Department of Justice (DOJ), Office of the Attorney General where he oversees the Community Engagement, Response and Engagement (CARE) team.  This team is responsible for cultivating relationships with historically marginalized and underrepresented communities in line with DOJ’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of its work on behalf of the people of California, including in the fight for environmental, economic, and social justice.

Ben has been involved in major public health policy issues involving California for the last 25 years, including tobacco control regulation, Medi-Cal expansion, reproductive rights, transportation, and environmental justice. 

Ben served as a Legislative Deputy to a former Assembly member – advising the strategic policy and direction of the state’s delivery system of health, mental health, and public health services to 35+ million state residents. He has also served as a Council Aide to a Los Angeles City Council member advising the policy and direction on environmental justice for Los Angeles residents. He has also served as a staff member and senior advisor to the Asian Pacific American Leadership Foundation. 

Benjamin has helped to increase civic engagement among Asian and Pacific Islander (API) communities across the state and the nation and strengthen communication among API elected and appointed officials by advocating the formation of an organization of nationwide API officials. He was also instrumental in the delivery and management of statewide API Stop the Hate grants during the coronavirus pandemic.

He is an alumnus of La Sierra University, Loma Linda University and Whittier College School of Law.
